April 22 - Busy week in our small but mighty Community Cupboard! 37 shoppers (which averages about 1 shopper every 15 minutes of our "open for business hours") came for personal care & household items, and food for their families. "Thank you" to all who make it possible for us to be there for our neighbors in need!
April 15 - Had a visit from an old friend today. He first came to us in December 2012, unsheltered & unemployed. We've helped in numerous ways over the years...car repairs, resume/job search help, phone minutes, groceries....and friendship. He's taken many steps forward and many steps back. He told us that after 8 months of steady employment his "couch surfing" days are over...he has an apartment AND a 2nd job. Income and shelter...he is so grateful and so happy! We should all take a page out of his book.
April 5 - As we slog through the post-fundraiser clean-up process attempting to get everything counted, folded, packed and safely tucked away we received a powerful reminder as to why we do what we do....and why Chef's Best is so very important. A client popped in today just to say "thank you"...for the phone minutes, the groceries....and for helping him get a new job. If only you all could have seen his beaming smile and excitement! Thank you donors and all who supported Chef's Best 2016....you've changed another life.
March 23 - Transportation can be a huge barrier. Interviews, jobs, medical appointments, and even support services become unachievable steps forward without transportation. In the 1st 2 months of 2016, we were able to help 14 people on their journey by providing transportation assistance ...our donors change lives!
March 16 Had a client experience today - too long to explain here. It was a "can't get A without B...can't get B without A" ...textbook "Catch 22". OH...and did I mention, you can't get a job without BOTH? Makes ya wonder - would the unemployment rate would be lower if we could remove the senseless barriers that prevent someone from moving forward - empower instead of oppress????
Mar 4 - We just had a visit from a woman whose health is such that her children have to live with a relative and she has no option for shelter until Monday when she can meet with her case manager. Our donors have made it possible for us to get her sheltered in a local hotel for the weekend.
For many of us it's so easy to get caught up in the craziness of our daily lives that we often take for granted all that we have. May we all take pause daily to appreciate ... family, friends, employment, health...and the roof over your head.
Feb 29 - "Carlo" has 2 part-time jobs and is working soooo hard to get back on his feet - "3 stapes forward" Today we partnered with St. Agnes Outreach Services, St. Vincent de Paul (Ss. Simon & Jude chapter) and the West Chester Salvation Army to prevent him from being evicted and taking "5 steps back".
JAN 31 -In 2015 we served 65 of the 114 new shelter residents at Safe Harbor...our little but might Community Cupboard distributed over 28,000 lbs of groceries...we aided 68 people w/ transporation-car insurance/repairs/bus tokens=jobs,interviews,appointments...90 people avoided becoming or remaining homeless in 2015 as a result of the support we were able to provide. Without ACT in Faith, 46 adults & 44 children would have gone unsheltered. Without our donors there is no ACT in Faith.
