Diary

Oct 7 - Remember our Sept 28 post about shoes, backpack, phone, job search help, resume...HOPE??? Well, we just learned that our friend has been hired by a local business!! EMPLOYMENT! Another HUGE step forward in his journey.

Sept 28 - We had the honor of joining another journey today....another opportunity to travel, if only briefly, with someone determined to overcome. We parted ways with teary eyes, full hearts, and the knowledge that - despite our different paths, we are one in our humanity.

Aug 24 - Faced with a budget-draining student loan, Lynn and her daughter were facing eviction. After budgeting guidance, connections to support resources, and a conversation with her landlord, Lynn was able to "float her ship" herself...without any financial support from us. Sometimes a little knowledge is more empowering than any other type of assistance could be.

July 25 - A new Community Cupboard shopper just told one of our volunteers, "I'm so glad I came here today. Just talking to you has made me feel better."

July 2 - Adam, a shelter resident came to us in need of clothing, bus tokens and a hair cut in preparation for his upcoming job interview. He left the office grateful and relieved. Yesterday he called to share the good news...he got the job, an Assistant Managers position. We gave Adam a lift over some hurdles and his talent earned him the job. Thank you donors.

May 9 -  One in every 45 children in the US experiences homelessness each year. Thanks to our donors, a single mother and her 3 children avoided being part of that statistic. We helped mom pay the rent arrears and she has a great lead on a job. Things are looking up!

April 22 -  Busy week in our small but mighty Community Cupboard! 37 shoppers (which averages about 1 shopper every 15 minutes of our "open for business hours") came for personal care & household items, and food for their families. "Thank you" to all who make it possible for us to be there for our neighbors in need!

April 15 -  Had a visit from an old friend today. He first came to us in December 2012, unsheltered & unemployed. We've helped in numerous ways over the years...car repairs, resume/job search help, phone minutes, groceries....and friendship. He's taken many steps forward and many steps back. He told us that after 8 months of steady employment his "couch surfing" days are over...he has an apartment AND a 2nd job. Income and shelter...he is so grateful and so happy! We should all take a page out of his book.
