Mar 2 - Living on a thread leaves no room for the unexpected. Felix has to have surgery and will be unable to work for weeks. We've partnered with the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul and have a plan in place to help him NOT end up homeless by the time he's healed. We're all one "unexpected" away from being Felix...that's why it's so important that we work together.
Jan 9 - Today we assisted 7 people within 2 hours…6 of them were unscheduled walk-ins. Two facing eviction, connections to other resources for 3 of them, employment info, budgeting guidance, cell phone minutes, and a gas card for someone who starting a job tomorrow. Our donor make it possible for us to be when they need us.
Dec 24 - Thank you to John Brandt-Lee, owner of Avalon Restaurant, his patrons, the ladies of both Headquarters Hair Salon, and Kappa Delta Alumni. Again this year, each of these groups reached out to share the love of the season with a family in need. Yes there were presents given but these acts of kindness are really about the loving embrace of strangers. The real gifts are that of faith, hope, and love.
Nov 30 - A cold, rainy November day...nothing like it to make you appreciate the roof over your head...and your heater. In the last 2 days we connected 2 men, who'd been sleeping outside, to shelter fund an an emergency hotel stay - his new place isn't available. The other to a men's shelter that will provide him with longer-term support to help get him back on his feet.
Oct 28 - We were visited by 3 former clients today, all of whom we assisted in different ways, at different times, Each shared good news...no longer shelter residents, all are housed, employed, and very appreciative of the support we were able to provide. Thank you donors for making it possible for us to walk along side of people when they need someone in their corner!
Oct 7 - Remember our Sept 28 post about shoes, backpack, phone, job search help, resume...HOPE??? Well, we just learned that our friend has been hired by a local business!! EMPLOYMENT! Another HUGE step forward in his journey.
Sept 28 - We had the honor of joining another journey today....another opportunity to travel, if only briefly, with someone determined to overcome. We parted ways with teary eyes, full hearts, and the knowledge that - despite our different paths, we are one in our humanity.
Aug 24 - Faced with a budget-draining student loan, Lynn and her daughter were facing eviction. After budgeting guidance, connections to support resources, and a conversation with her landlord, Lynn was able to "float her ship" herself...without any financial support from us. Sometimes a little knowledge is more empowering than any other type of assistance could be.
